CNN: US investigators have corroborated parts of Russia dossier

In early January, reports surfaced of the existence of an unsubstantiated 35-page dossier put together by a former British intelligence agent that contained details about Donald Trump.

At the time, the U.S. intelligence officials briefed President Obama and Trump on the memos but emphasized the details in the documents were unverified.

Citing multiple law enforcement and intelligence officials, CNN reported on Friday that some elements of the dossier have been “corroborated” by the U.S. investigators.

While CNN says that the new information doesn’t pertain to the “salacious allegations” in the dossier, “the intercepts do confirm that some of the conversations described in the dossier took place between the same individuals on the same days and from the same locations as detailed in the dossier, according to the officials.”

Furthermore the media outlet notes, “Officials who spoke to CNN cautioned they still have not reached any judgment on whether the Russian government has any compromising information about the President.”

According to Business Insider, “The dossier was part of an opposition-research project conducted by a former British spy, Christopher Steele, at the behest of anti-Trump Republicans and, later, Democrats. Steele was the former head of the Russia desk in Moscow for Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6.”

When the report of the existence of the dossier was released back in January, Trump had tweeted, “FAKE NEWS – A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!”
