More than 100 varieties of packaged foods — including breakfast dishes, sandwiches, salads and pasta — have been recalled after an inspection found evidence of listeria at the company that makes them, the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers.

SunBurst Foods of Goldsboro, North Carolina, is recalling 137 products sold under a variety of brands — such as SunBurst, Fresh Bites and various private brands, including River Edge Farms, CFW, Southern Zest, CJ’s Vending, Binford Street Deli, Middle Georgia Vendors, Roanoke Foods, Select Foods and Jesse Jones.

The products being recalled were sold in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, and they might be found in vending machines and convenience stores. SunBurst said it has not learned of anyone who has been sickened by its products, the FDA said.

Listeria monocytogenes “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA said. Pregnant women infected by it can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths. Other symptoms include headaches, stiffness and gastrointestinal problems.

Army Issues a Warning, Too

The U.S. Army issued a warning to soldiers about the recall and said that Fresh Bites turkey on wheat sandwiches were placed on “medical hold” and removed from the shelves of all commissaries.

“Anyone who has purchased this product is asked not to consume it,” said Richard Stith, lead consumer safety officer for the Defense Commissary Agency in Fort Lee, Virginia, said. “Currently we know that this action is specific to our stores on the East Coast.”

If you bought any of the products that were recalled, you should either return them where they were purchased for a full refund or destroy them, the FDA said. Those with questions can call the company at (919) 778-2151 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
